Every year, thousands of people end up in hospital emergency rooms due to shower falls and other injuries suffered in the bathroom.
According to a report published by the center for disease control and prevention, the figure stands at around 235,000 people per year.
Over one in three of these hospital visits were caused during bathing or showering, and 14 percent results in hospitalization.
Gotha alive was designed and built with this shocking statistic in mind, and aims to help those who are most vulnerable to falls in the shower to avoid serious falls that result in hospital visits.
It has been shown that injuries while showering increase with age, with the over 65 age category being particularly vulnerable. Although other bathroom activities have also been highlighted as the cause of injuries, by far the most hazardous activities for all age groups are bathing, showering and the associated actions. Out of all bathroom injuries, those occurring in or near the bathtub or shower account for more than two-thirds of hospital emergency room visits. The report also has clearly highlighted the increased risk for over 65’s, with 2.5% of all non fatal injuries occurring in the bathroom for this category while the overall figure is around 1%.
The statistics in the report point to a clear need for greater awareness, and active measures to improve safety while showering. Making the bathroom safer is essential to improving the quality of life of the older demographic.
